In April 2008, Martin Smith was preaching at Hillsong Church in Sydney, which is where I grew up. I’d moved to Denmark nearly 3 years earlier and must admit that all dreams of music and recording had gone up in flames long ago. “Where’s the person who wrote that kids song “Let Your Light Shine”? As soon as I heard it I knew it was a hit…You’re going to have radio hits…God starting something because of you…You were faithful and wrote some songs for a kids album…. There’s going to be some surprises for you!!!”
In November 2011, Cathy Lechner prophesied “And your next CD will sell 4 times more than anything else you’ve ever done!”
I wrote a song called All Things New and sang it as an item at church the next Sunday. When I’d finished singing, Pernille Lilland got up and prophesied that the nations were being opened and that the time had come for Impact Church to send me out! Bruno and Rakel Knutzen (my Senior Pastors) both got up and confirmed this, and there was a pretty heavy sense that God was moving in the place. The Church took an offering that day and gave 50,000 kroner for me to make this album. Someone came the next day and invested another 50,000 kroner!
Suddenly I had enough money to book the studio, fly Dave George in from Hillsong London to play and produce, and my brother Pete and his family came from Australia. He ended up playing bass, engineering, co producing, mixing and mastering free of charge, bless his heart!
While I was in Australia to mix the album at Pete’s studio, I went fishing with my brother in law Michael one Saturday morning. I told him all the miracles God was doing concerning this album, and he made the comment “Well freely you received, you should give it away for free too”.
I got back to Denmark and we starting sharing the Final Mixes with a couple of record labels… Nothing… Nothing for months and months… People at church were beginning to ask when the album was coming out… People wanted to know what was going on… Nothing…
I was having coffee with Jamie Høyer (he did all the art and the website for free too, bless his heart!) I didn’t have a clue on what to do next, and seeings the whole process had been so miraculous, I wasn’t keen on changing strategies now. Jamie made the comment “Well you did get it for free, maybe you should give it away.” This obviously caught my attention.
I got home and had a worship. The new Kim Walker-Smith album was playing in the background while I was praying. I was asking God if giving the album for free was the way to go. I told Him I wasn’t going to make any decisions until I’d heard from Him. The whole album was going to lay there dead and stinky if He didn’t breathe new life in to it.
I was suddenly aware of Kim singing that Chorus “I’m gonna waste it all on you. I’m gonna pour my heart’s perfume. I don’t care if I’m called a fool. I’m wasting it all on you.”
I quickly flicked my Bible open and read:
“While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head. Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume? It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly. “Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”” (Mark 14:3-6, 9 NIV)
I realized this is what I was being invited to do, pour out my offering for Jesus! So I wrote to Pete and Bruno and explained the situation and what I felt God was leading me to do. I told them that this album was valuable, and it was also their perfume being poured out. I told them I wouldn’t do it if they didn’t have peace about it. “Do it!” they replied! So we’re doing it!
